What causes the vertical black lines or "shadows" in the image?
Vertical dark bands, often called "shadows" or "channels," are typically caused by damaged array elements (crystals) or internal channel failures. The linear array contains 256 channels; if individual elements fail or lose electrical connection, the corresponding area of the image becomes a dark streak because no acoustic signal is transmitted or received from that segment.
